Why we chose the name of Polis?
The poleis were small communities self-sufficient , governed by self-government, a sort of small states independent of each other. The autonomous nature of the poleis derives from the geographic area of the greek , which prevented easy exchanges between the different urban realities as mostly mountainous. Often the various poleis were fighting each other for supremacy of the greek territory, is an example of the famous rivalry between Sparta and Athens .
Each polis was organized independently, according to its own laws and traditions. There were examples of the political regime poleis democracy , like Athens and oligarchic , as Sparta.
In addition to the territorial unit, however, the poleis were characterized by a social unit and a strictly political: it was, in fact, a group of citizens who are endowed with laws that are committed to respect. The citizens, therefore, subjects were no longer as in earlier societies, but exercised their power by electing representatives (magistrates) and intervening during the assemblies.
