Why we chose the name of Polis?
The poleis were small communities self-sufficient , governed by self-government, a sort of small states independent of each other. The autonomous nature of the poleis derives from its geographical territory of the greek , that prevented easy exchanges between different urban realities as mostly mountainous. Often the various poleis were fighting each other for supremacy of the greek territory, is an example of the famous rivalry between Sparta and Athens .
Each polis was organized independently, under their own laws and traditions. There were examples of the political regime poleis democracy , like Athens and oligarchic , as Sparta.
In addition to the territorial unit, however, the poleis were characterized by a social unit and a strictly political: it was, in fact, a group of citizens who are endowed with laws that are committed to respect. The citizens, therefore, were no longer subjects as antecedents in the company, but exercised their power by electing representatives (magistrates) and intervening during the meetings.
