Operation Fiumi 2008 with Legambiente
"Operation fiumi 2008" is touring the national campaign for monitoring, prevention and information on adapting to climate change and mitigation of landslide risk promoted by Legambiente together with the Department of Civil Protection, which will take place during October and November 2008.
In the 2008 national campaign, now in its sixth edition, in addition to prevention of landslides and floods, has been enhanced with new content and new initiatives, in particular addressing the issue of hydrogeological also in relation to adaptation to changes in climate, and renewing our commitment to the preservation and protection of rivers.
In the five previous editions of the national campaign has played important roles and made remarkable achievements: the collection and processing of data regarding the performance of local authorities in the prevention and mitigation of risks, the awareness for citizens, and in particular to children, with the initiatives dedicated to schools.
The campaign also led to further develop collaboration with the many civil protection associations operating throughout Italy and in particular with national associations such as the Scouts and CNGEI AGESCI, the National Alpine Association, the National Association of Fire Fighters Dismissal. The collaboration between Legambiente and other associations is a major achievement for that year: a time of growth, comparison and joint efforts on issues of fundamental importance for our country that we want to encourage more and more.
The crew of Operation Rivers will move along the Peninsula from north to south with 2/2 specially customized in order to increase the visibility of the campaign, making eleven stages in many regions. For each stage will be set up in a town square, a special operations center of the campaign, the center of all efforts and means of communication with the population. During the three days of each stage, in addition to the public presentation of the data collected on a regional basis "Ecosystem Risk", numerous special initiatives will be implemented in order to meet the greatest number of citizens, with particular attention given to schools.
In particular, will be organized:
"Hunt's Emergency Plan"
A real treasure hunt, especially involving children and school children, leading them to know the emergency plan designed for the city. The hunt plan is designed so as to move the kids through the streets of the city by answering questions related to knowledge of risk, the municipal system of civil defense, individual and collective behavior to be taken in case of emergency. Participants in the "Hunt Emergency Plan" will find the headquarters of the Joint Operations Center, the waiting area and the area of shelter provided by the Municipal Emergency Plans.
Cleaning the River
It will be organized a day of volunteering that will involve citizens and voluntary associations of various sections of levees in the cleaning of particularly degraded and / or remediation of areas previously affected by flooding. In particular, we will remove such bulky waste often found along our rivers, during floods, can obstruct the view of the bridges, to devastating effect in the event of flooding. For this activity will be paid particular attention to the involvement of local authorities, local voluntary associations of civil defense and scout groups.
Door open to citizens
At the Operations Center of the campaign will be set up a special tent, which will host an exhibition on the landslide risk, and banquets for the dissemination of information material to the citizens. Within the area will be given the opportunity to other voluntary associations of civil defense to set up booths for the presentation of its activities and initiatives. During the morning the pupils of primary and middle classes that will be led by a facilitator of Legambiente in an educational course for the knowledge of the main problems related to climate change and drought of the rivers, the hydrological risk, the individual and collective behavior to be taken to respect of the territory and ' environment and the proper management of emergencies in the event of a landslide or flood.
Games and educational activities
Important time of each stage of the campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of young people, through the activities carried out in the square. The boys visit the exhibition on the landslide risk, will participate in the "hunt plan" and other games designed for the occasion. In particular, they are involved in an educational game on the prevention and proper land management, called "Build a river safe", and another dedicated to emergency management in case of landslides or flooding.
National Days of Volunteers "Adopt a River"
In October, coinciding with a visit of the roadshow, a Saturday and Sunday will be dedicated to the creation of national days of volunteering for the prevention of landslide risk. Circles Legambiente, local authorities, regional bodies, schools and voluntary associations of civil defense and associations that have offered their cooperation in the campaign can be organized along more than 400 courses' water of our country days of routine maintenance embankments and hydraulic works with the removal of small and large and bulky waste landfills. The maintenance of the waterways' water are also a good opportunity for the dissemination of information materials and to increase the power of the media campaign.
The initiatives will be engaged thousands of volunteers across the country, aiming at the greatest possible involvement of the citizenry. A secretariat will take care of Legambiente initiative to collect applications, send the information material of the campaign, to receive a detailed report on the activities carried out locally and to realize an initiative of particular interest on which to focus the national communication. In all groups that participate in the national days with cleaning up a stretch of river will be given a true adoption of that portion of territory, to continue a careful maintenance work throughout the year.
