We were a dozen naturalists fans, mostly non-professionals, a year when we were planning to establish in Italy a section of the WWF , which started operating since 1961 in various countries around the world. We each donated 20,000 lire, my study was the architect of our offices: the desire to do so was the enthusiasm and was our strength. Thus began our adventure!
Nobody could imagine that the WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature, was to become the world's largest organization dedicated to the preservation of nature and with the support of almost 5 million people, would have worked decisively in nearly 100 countries. The achievements are many: thanks to the support of 300,000 members and 400,000 supporters have spent the 60's safe, in our country, more than 30,000 acres of nature: the Oasis, the first to be returned in the list of wetlands of importance International!
Today, animals hunted at one time or considered dangerous as the wolf, are legally protected and many species considered extinct, such as the lynx and the stork, have returned to attend our environments. Thousands of pairs of flamingos nesting in Sardinia today, fishing is prohibited breathing underwater, dolphins and turtles are protected and secure.
Throughout the world there are thousands of field projects, alongside local communities, who see hundreds of people involved in biological experts, researchers, zoologists, veterinarians, technicians, plus the support of thousands of volunteers.
But not enough.
New commitments and new challenges lie ahead: raise awareness about the value of biodiversity and the link between the health of ecosystems and human wellbeing; bring attention to climate change and global warming, that threaten entire ecosystems, because of 'increased intensity and frequency of so-called "extreme weather events" (hurricanes, floods, heat waves, etc..) Improving awareness of the energy system and create a new generation of active citizens, aware and "efficient by nature."
I hope this is just the beginning of a great friendship between you and the WWF become a member, can help us to do much more. I hope to soon be able to give you my welcome!

"... Many years ago I was a hunter. One day, while I was hunting for bears in the woods of Turkey, I witnessed a scene that has changed my life: a female bear with her three puppies, a few feet from me. In a few seconds I realized that I was doing crazy. I returned to Italy, I sold the guns and, with a group of friends who adore nature, I founded the WWF. I was born in a dream: to protect the animals, the environment, do something to build a world of harmony between man and nature ... "
Fulco Pratesi
Honorary President of WWF Italy
Being a member means the WWF to save endangered species, pristine environment and promote sustainable development by helping the poorest people to improve their living conditions. It means to believe in a better world in which nature is no longer attacked and devastated by man. Means to defend with passion and love our planet, the only one, as far as I know, that presents the miracle of life.
